Met Office and NERC joint supercomputer system (Monsoon2)
Monsoon2 delivers supercomputing infrastructure to enable collaboration between NERC and Met Office scientists.
Key aims
The main aim of Monsoon2 is to enable easier collaboration between scientists based at the Met Office and those funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) who are based in universities and research centres. It provides a common computing platform, post-processing capability, fast data link and access to data archives.
It also addresses two of the key objectives of the Joint Weather and Climate Research Programme (JWCRP):
- ensuring that the UK has access to internationally competitive tools for forecasting climate and its impacts, and
- enabling closer collaboration between NERC and the Met Office.
Current use
Monsoon2 is used for research into a number of modelling challenges, including the representation of aerosols and ozone, the prediction of storms and increasing the resolution of climate models. The output from the science carried out on Monsoon2 is used by policy makers, enabling them to make more informed and timely decisions on issues such as adaptation to future climate change.
