Emma delivers our 'Climate data for reporting and decision making training', helping customers to identify and use freely available climate data to understand their current and future business risks. This course provides an insight into the risk assessment framework used within the consultancy team at the Met Office to support customers with their climate change risk assessments.
Emma also works closely with the rail industry to provide low adhesion and leaf fall risk forecasts to the rail sector, as well as carrying out research into how state of the art forecasting tools could be used in the sector. Current work focusses on the use of ensemble forecasts to provide risk based forecasts for decision making during adverse weather events. Emma is also working on the development of industry-specific weather and climate training, helping to upskill operational staff.
Career Background
Emma graduated from the University of Oxford with a first class BA in Geography, specialising in climate science in her final year. She then went on to study a Master’s in Applied Meteorology at the University of Reading where she wrote her dissertation on the influence of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation on the intensity and frequency of North Atlantic wind storms in partnership with a weather risk company. After graduating, Emma joined this company where she spent a year delivering operational forecasts to insurance clients as well as developing statistical models relating weather data to insurance claims, before joining the Met Office in 2019.
