Scotland has provisionally experienced its equal-wettest June on record (shared with 1938) with 156mm of rainfall, 75% above its average for the month. The UK as a whole has so far had 50% more rainfall than average this month. This places the month as provisionally the eighth wettest June on record for the UK as a whole in a series from 1910. Many parts of southern and eastern Scotland have received over twice the normal June rainfall.  

A number of Scottish counties have had their wettest June on record. Stations at both Edinburgh Botanic Gardens and RAF Leuchars, among others, have had their wettest June on record, with 180.6 mm and 148.4 mm respectively. These stations each have record-lengths exceeding 75 years.

The warm spell that mostly impacted southern parts of the UK helped set the top temperature of the year so far at 34.5°C, at Heathrow. This pushed the average temperature for the month to sit 1.5°C above average, making it so far the equal fifth warmest June on record for the UK as a whole. England has experienced its equal second warmest June on record.

Eastern England was warmest compared to average, with the monthly mean temperature more than 2.5 °C above average across much of East Anglia, making this the second warmest June on record: only June 1976 was warmer.

Climate scientist Mike Kendon said: “This June has had an interesting mix of weather, bringing not only hot conditions that persisted in the south for some time but also persistent rain in the north. England also experienced some unusually strong winds early in the month.  

“Notably this has been the first appreciably wetter than average month since June last year, showing how dry the last twelve months have been. It is not uncommon for the UK to reach or exceed its average monthly rainfall values in just a few wet spells. This is the case for much of southern and central parts of the UK, however northern areas did experience more prolonged periods of rain over the month which accounts for the high and in some cases record-breaking rainfall totals.”
