Space Applications and Nowcasting
Improving the use of satellite and surface observations for situational awareness and forecasting applications.
The Space Applications and Nowcasting (SAN) group leverages observations from the Global Observing System and transforms them into products for situational awareness, nowcasting and wider forecasting applications.
We work closely with the Satellite and Surface Assimilation group who are engaged in the assimilation of a wide range of satellite and surface-based data into our numerical weather prediction (NWP) models.
Our Purpose
Through our science and our observations, to improve the capability of the Met Office to know what is happening now in our environment and to know how the situation is likely to evolve in the very short term.
Our Teams
There are four groups in SAN:
- Satellite Imagery
- Nowcasting
- Space Data Products and Systems
- Space Weather Research
