We are the national meteorological service for the UK. And we provide critical weather services and world-leading climate science, helping everyone stay safe and thrive.
From our beginnings in the middle 1800’s we have led the way in the science of meteorology and its application. We’ve been continually innovating and evolving, and we’ve grown and changed enormously. Find out more about our history, innovation and what motivates us.
Our history
Since our foundation by Vice-Admiral FitzRoy in 1854, we’ve been at the heart of UK weather taking observations and providing accurate weather forecasts to help save lives and livelihoods.
Innovation
We not only innovate in terms of weather forecast, but across all our science and services. This involves exploiting cutting-edge and emerging technologies, and pushing new boundaries to deliver weather and climate science and services that make an impact in our ever-changing world.
Impact
What we do can impact everyone individually and collectively. Whether that is in terms of our Public Weather Service and National Severe Weather Warnings Service remit or our role at the heart of the global climate conversation. The impact of work by our expert teams is seen on a regional, national and international scale.

To ensure what we do continues to have impact, we strive to make our weather forecasts as useful as they can be for the UK public, governments and businesses. And we are committed to innovating and refining our processes continually so we can improve forecast accuracy.
