Charlie Bates
Charlie specializes in modelling the dispersion of volcanic eruption clouds using the Met Office's Numerical Atmospheric-dispersion Modelling Environment (NAME).
Areas of Expertise
- Volcanic cloud transport and dispersion
Current Activities
Charlie is working in the Volcanic and Chemical Dispersion team of the Atmospheric Dispersion and Air Quality (ADAQ) group within Weather Science. Charlie is currently working on the development of resuspended volcanic ash forecasts using the Met Office Dispersion Model (NAME). Additionally, Charlie’s research focuses on modelling volcanic umbrella clouds and advancing the umbrella cloud scheme.
Career Background
Charlie has worked in the Atmospheric Dispersion and Air Quality Group since joining the Met Office in 2023. Prior to this, Charlie completed a MMath Masters in Mathematics with Honours in Mathematics at the University of Exeter. Charlie’s Masters project used the Met Office Dispersion Model (NAME) to model volcanic ash cloud deposits from the Calbuco volcanic eruption in 2015.
