Daley Calvert

Areas of Expertise

  • The TKE scheme, used to represent vertical mixing in NEMO.

  • Ocean vertical mixing processes.

Current activities

Daley's work aims at gaining a better understanding of the behaviour of the vertical mixing scheme in NEMO, and subsequently applying this knowledge to improve the performance of Unified Model configurations that use NEMO to represent the ocean.

Some of Daley's work has involved running a large number of ocean simulations without an atmospheric model, to observe the effect on the ocean model when subtle changes are made to the vertical mixing scheme. These findings will be used to highlight areas for the development of vertical mixing parametrizations, and will provide guidance across a wide range of Unified Model timescales (including Ocean Forecasting Research, Monthly to decadal prediction and Climate, Cryosphere and Oceans) as to how representation of these processes, and, therefore, the performance of the models themselves can be improved.

Daley also contributes to the assessment of Met Office climate prediction model: HadGEM3 family, specifically evaluating the performance of ocean vertical mixing processes and their impact on the ocean state.

Career background

Daley joined the Met Office in 2008, having graduated from the University of Reading in 2005 with a BSc in Meteorology, and then from the University of East Anglia in 2007 with an MSc in Atmospheric Sciences. Daley has been part of the Climate Cryosphere and Oceans group since first joining the Met Office.
