Dr John Caesar
John works on investigating changing climate extremes using models and observations
Areas of expertise
- Climate extremes
- Observations and datasets
- Climate model validation
Current activities
John works on the EU FP7 HELIX project which considers high-end climate impacts and extremes, with focus regions of Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, and south Asia. Specific tasks include provision of high resolution global model projections and analysis of changes in extreme events.
He has also recently worked on ESPA Deltas which is an interdisciplinary project focused on responses to environmental change in the Bangladesh coastal region.
John also continues to work with observational climate datasets, including the HadGHCND daily temperature monitoring dataset developed jointly with the United States National Climatic Data Center. He has also been involved with the series of international extremes workshops run by the joint WMO CCl/CLIVAR/JCOMM Expert team on climate change detection and indices.
Career background
Whilst at the Met Office Hadley Centre, John has worked on a range of projects covering climate extremes, observational datasets, climate model evaluation, and climate change mitigation. John studied Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia and followed this with a PhD in the Climatic Research Unit on the interaction between the Asian monsoon and sea surface temperature patterns.
