Career background
John read Environmental Science at the University of Wolverhampton, covering subjects as diverse as ecology, meteorology and geographical information systems. While still studying for his degree, he joined Weather Services International (WSI, now The Weather Company) as a trainee meteorologist, forecasting for the media sector.
He spent the next 11 years at the WSI Operations Centre in Birmingham, where he expanded his knowledge of other industries including energy, aviation and road. One project required surveying parts of the UK road network, configuring the associated weather data and developing route-based forecasting services for winter maintenance decision makers. This allowed John to grow his interest and expertise in applied meteorology for road transport.
John joined the surface transport department of the Met Office in 2013 as a seasoned operational meteorologist, where he contributed to enhancing our road forecasts and data services.
