A showery start to the week, turning colder later.

Today:

Any mist clearing then largely dry and bright during the morning with sunny spells. A chance of isolated heavy showers through the middle of the day but some places staying dry. Feeling pleasant in any sunshine with light winds. Maximum temperature 17 °C.

Tonight:

Clouding over this evening with a period of heavy rain arriving just after dark. Drier again by the early hours with low cloud and patchy fog developing. Staying relatively mild. Minimum temperature 10 °C.

Tuesday:

A misty and murky start for some, then brightening up with sunny intervals but plenty of heavy showers also developing. These may turn thundery and slow-moving by the afternoon. Maximum temperature 16 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Sunny spells and fewer showers on Wednesday and turning windier. Colder on Thursday and Friday with cloudy periods and occasional sunny spells. Patchy fog and frost overnight as winds ease.

A colder interlude across all areas of the UK as northerly winds push south bringing showers, these wintry across hills in the N. Perhaps a more organised spell of rain and stronger winds across Scotland especially as we head into the weekend, meanwhile southern areas are likely to see much drier conditions than of late with some sunshine by day. Temperatures below average, especially in the north with some overnight frost possible along with some patchy mist and fog. Later in the weekend likely to turn more unsettled once more with outbreaks of rain and some stronger winds expected to return to the northwest of the UK especially, although the southeast may well hang on to drier conditions throughout.

A continuation of low pressure systems tracking in from the Atlantic is the most likely scenario for the rest of October. This means wet and windy weather at times, especially across England and Wales, but with a suggestion that Scotland and Northern Ireland may be more likely to see longer breaks in the weather, and more in the way of drier spells. It is possible that these drier conditions could be seen more widely later in the month as higher pressure further north extends southwards for a time. This would also bring an increased chance of overnight fog and frost. Temperatures will tend to be close to average overall in the south, but probably below average in the north and northwest.
