UK storm season 2023/24
A summary of all the named storms from the 2023/24 storm season in the UK.
The 2023/24 storm season saw 12 named storms, the greatest number of named storms since the first season in 2015.
The season started with Storm Agnes on the 27 September 2023 through to Storm Lilian on the 22 August 2024.
In October 2023, Storm Babet brought some very strong winds, gusting at over 58mph across northeast England and much of Scotland, but the more significant impacts where from the rainfall. Eastern Scotland saw exceptional rainfall with 150 to 200mm of rain falling in the wettest areas and the issuing of two red warnings for rain.
Storms Isha and Jocelyn, the ninth and tenth named storms of the season, arrived in quick succession in late January 2024. The storms were influenced by a powerful jet stream which was intensified by a large contrast in temperature across North America caused by a pool of cold air over Canada and the United States sinking south. Storm Isha brought widespread strong winds, particularly across the northern half of the UK, on 21 to 22 January 2024, where winds gusted at 69 to 81mph, including a gust 99mph in Northumberland.
